HG Mould Spray is by far the most popular mould remover on the UK market, despite its outdated packaging. Produced by HG International, a Dutch company that specialises in home cleaning and protectant chemicals, they claim the spray will remove “all” mould spots. This to-the-point review will see if it’s any better than standard domestic cleaning fluids and how best to use it.
The real question is: is it just diluted bleach?

How Does HG Mould Spray Work?
To understand how the spray works, we first need to understand what is contained within it (ingredients).
HG Mould Spray Ingredients
We managed to get a hold of this closely-guarded list of main chemical compounds that make up the formula, and they include:
- Water
No surprises here.
- Sodium hypochlorite (roughly 3% concentration)
Otherwise known as liquid bleach.
- Sodium hydroxide (roughly 1% concentration)
A corrosive, alkaline compound often used as an industrial cleaning agent.
It’s this combination of bleach mixed with a highly corrosive compound that makes the spray so effective. In fact, Aggie MacKenzie of ‘How Clean Is Your House?’ fame was quoted in the Times Magazine as saying:
“The only thing I know that will remove those black stains is HG Mould Spray”
It’s important to remember that mould is a living organism, it’s just a very hardy one. This means that if you can kill it you can get rid of it. That’s what the very potent HG mould spray does, far beyond what bleach alone can do.
HG Mould Spray Review Continued
The first thing you’re going to want to do before you use the spray is open a window or two, then spray the affected area and retreat to another room as the spray gives off an incredible chemical stench. HG recommend that the spray is left in place for 10 minutes, so give it that length of time before re-entering the room.
This is the best mould remover on the market, however for particularly stubborn patches be prepared to give the affected area a couple of doses at least and also be prepared to scrub a little. You could also leave the spray on for longer before washing it off with water, but remember that the spray is highly corrosive and has a bleaching effect so you increase the risk of damaging your walls or tiles by doing this. Never use the spray on an enamel surface as it will corrode the finish.
One of the best things about the HG Mould Spray is that it limits the amount of regrowth of mould that you’ll see, as it kills the ‘root’ of the mould spots and also somewhat prevents new seeding of mould from the spores in the air.
